Retinal Vein Occlusion

Retinal Vein Occlusion affects about 30% of people over the age of 50 years. Associated risk factors are hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol. There are 3 main types of retinal vein occlusion- branch, central and hemi retinal vein occlusion. The vision can become very blurred due to build up of fluid (oedema) at the macula. Some patients can get abnormal blood vessel growth on the retina or on the iris, the latter giving rise to rubeotic glaucoma.

Treatment of retina vein occlusion involves managing the blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol. Some eye treatments are retinal laser and repeated injections of antiVEGF or steroid.
